I have a weird fetish for mid-80s to late-90s American three-box grampa mobiles. Mobile sofas. This includes any Oldsmobile or Buick, but also to Ford Taurus (2nd gen and up) and anything Panther based, Chrysler New Yorkers, Chevy Corsicas and Luminas, and even the odd Japanese cruiser like Inifiniti J and Q series.

It has to be unpretentious and slightly beat down, like a dad mowing the lawn in an white pit-stained undershirt, pleated khaki shorts, and black sox on a Tuesday evening just to get away from the wife and kids for 20 minutes. Bench seats, preferably velour or mousefur. Lazy V6. Column shifter. Cassette deck jamming Neil Diamond with the EQ set flat. PepBoys cupholder attached to the window frame with Love's Travel Stop mug half filled with four-day old coffee, black, no milk or sugar. Air conditioning that smells exactly like a Red Roof Inn single queen room.

There's something comforting about cars like that. They're a thrift store leather jacket. Brown, with an elastic waist.

I had a Cutlass Supreme during my sophomore year of college. At the time, I thought it was pretty damn sweet, all 160k+ miles of it.

I really wanted to push it over 200k, but the tranny failed with 195, and I moved on to a civic hb. The polar opposite.

Absolutely agree. The design from that era is so underrated.

I shouldn't be able to agree, but I do. They're the ultimate comfort car.

I've had a few of these types of things. Picked up a gutless supreme that was immaculate a long time ago for only $400 just because it needed intake gaskets. Really wish they had made these things RWD...

As awful as the cars were, they look damn good. Low shoulderlines, sleek noses, nice details. Shame they were marred by awful quality and underpinnings.

My neighbor's wife drove one for years. She was in her mid 20s... Let's just say it was a study in contrast.

When my friends and I used to drive to Dallas to see shows in the late 90s, we'd always take this one girl's parents' Concorde. Dammit if that thing wasn't built to cruise at 80 in the interstate.

This one had minimal rust which when you consider Ottawa is the coldest saltiest place on the planet is quite an accomplishment for a 90's car.

I drove one of these for about 6 months until it almost burnt my house down.

Then I thought it would be a swell idea to buy a brand new 2000 Plymouth Gran Voyager with the disposable transaxle.

I'll buy another Chrysler product when they stuff the trunk full of 100 dollar bills.
